Audition Evaluation

The monologue i chose to perform was the one in the character of mona who is a teenage girl who from my perspective seemed slightly neglected by her mother after it is implied that her father had a affair. I was inspired by the thought of neglect and a broken home and the many different ways in which this can effect a person.  I did not wish to perform this monologue with a sad or distraught undertone instead i decided i wanted to relate more to someone who usually tries to hide all their emotions under anger and sarcasm but at the point of the monologue seems to be having some sort of a mental crisis when encountering her mothers home.

it is crucial to be as engulfed in the character your playing as possible whilst performing the piece so that when it comes to learning the lines they seem like the characters natural response therefore making it easier to remember and recite accurately, during todays performance i did indeed struggle to accomplish this which slightly disappointed me. the way in which i built my character is by sitting down at any point and putting myself into deep thought about what sort of person it is that i wish to showcase and what is the best way for me to portray them, in the case of Mona i wanted to be different from the way in which she was typically played and instead create a different understanding of her one in which was more relatable so that i could also showcase a small part of myself considering it was my first performance at Coulsdon.

my body language was a significant part in my performance yet also an element in which i feel as though i struggled due to 'my nerves getting the best of me' yet despite this i do still feel secured in my performance and although it may not have been the best i know i tried and did not allow my fear to get the better of me. i changed the tempo of my voice as frequently as i felt plausible. and overall i believe i delivered, not my strongest but a acceptable performance that was entertaining and emotional.

Unit 1: physical theatre evaluation

the first piece we did was inspired by DV8's piece cost of living, during the piece there was little dialogue so when composing our piece we decided to use one simple impactful word which was "TRAPPED" which was the main image we wanted to get across, due to our social status and a cycle of drug abuse, which we also portrayed and was our main theme, the way in which people whom may not be as affluent or privileged are trapped by social expectations.

the second piece Idid was also inspired by another one of DV8'S pieces, strange fish and we used freeze frames to begin with then eventually extended our freeze frames with transitions to create a unique piece of theatre which also showed a perception of my groups thoughts about love.

in my opinion my self management was one of my strongest Assets during the preparation of this performance because in my spare time was thinking about ways in which I could elevate my groups performances and make the pieces in general more captivating. I always have a moderate level of concentration and my attitude was extremely positive.

when it came to the creation of my piece I participated a lot of ideas and played a major role in the creation of my pieces meaning that when there was a lack of creative energies among the group i expressed some of my ideas such as the types of love, for the second piece, or the way in which the transitions should happen, or the first.

although majority of my work was in fact seamless but when my group did have any corrections I made sure to listen and follow them.

DV8 is extremely physical and they find ways to make their movement unique so when producing my piece I ensured that in the pieces they looked peculiar at times so that although it was an original piece of work we could still include aspects of dv8's style which also included miming and cannon movement.

between the two dv8 pieces we studied there was many similarities. the theme of love and social status was present in both pieces as well as the theme of desire and social status. dv8's pieces are not pretentious which is why another similarity between both pieces is that they are both relatable.

when Lloyd Newson was choreographing his pieces he didn't want the audience to watch it passively he wanted an intellectual response from his audience which is what made his choreography distinctive.

in each pice I feel like our actual dancing skills are not comparative to dv8 due to the fact that none of us are true professional dances but keeping this in mind I still feel that our dance aspects were present and we did attempt in both groups to complete this with maximum effort.

as a SMART target my aim is to become more knowledgeable about dv8's way of dance and movement so that I can refer to it properly in future pieces instead of allowing my work to be affected by my lack of dance knowledge.
